Jack D. Sterling
Jack D Sterling joined the staff of Looney & Conrad, P.C. on March 1, 2017. Hired to perform other tasks, Jack was encouraged to reactivate his law license and on March 20, 2017, he achieved active status as an attorney. Jack left the active practice of law in the mid-nineties to pursue his lifelong dream of writing creatively.
In 2002, Jack published his first novel, “Well of Tears” under the nom de plume, Jacob Dunne. Two others novels are currently in the last stages of completion prior to publication. “Wedding Belles” is a psychological thriller and “Cataclysm” is a dystopian epic that will likely be published as a trilogy.
Jack’s life is a varied journey beginning in Bellville, Texas immediately after World War II in the first year of the “Baby Boomer” generation. From early childhood in the Piney Woods around Nacogdoches, Texas to the Plains of West Texas where he graduated from Odessa Permian High School, he invested his spare time in reading, exploring and playing a variety of sports.
His path to law school encompassed employment at an NBC affiliate where he worked his way from floor man, to cameraman, to audio man and finally late night director; two years as a convenience store manager; and three and a half years as an Arlington Texas Police Officer while attending the University of Texas at Arlington, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Government.
In 1971, Jack began his law school career at Bates College of Law at the University of Houston. For two of those three years, he was a law clerk for the U. S. Attorney in the Civil Rights and Appellate office. Jack also received the prestigious A.A. White award for outstanding service to the Student Bar Association.
1974 found Jack working in Austin, Texas as an administrative aide to a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of the State of Texas. He continued in the capacity of aide when the delegate, Gene Jones, switched hats back to the position of State Representative.
Upon receiving his law license in April of 1974, Jack opened his practice in Southeast Houston. A few years later he formed the law firm of Sterling and Mock located in the Village in West University Place. The practice focused on family and criminal law with a growing section on bankruptcy and banking.
His diverse career saw Jack producing self-help seminars, conducting business and leadership seminars, and establishing a bioremediation company with his two brothers, Fred and Gene Sterling.
In his first year of the active practice of law, Jack has worked on diverse cases from divorce to guardianships to contract and real estate law. He has further expanded his interests by joining three sections of the State Bar of Texas covering Intellectual Property Law; Oil, Gas and Energy Resources Law; and Real Estate, Probate and Trust Law.
Jack’s life has come full circle, returning to Bellville where he lives with his wife of 33 years, Bobbie, and their beloved dogs, Dani Mae and Didi Fae. Jack and Bobbie raised three boys to be productive citizens, and enjoy playing with and spoiling their four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
